Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle has responded to the release of the report by Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane on the misappropriation of funds in the province during Nelson Mandela’s funeral in 2013.

The report that was released on Monday shows R300-million was squandered in inflated charges paid to service providers without proof of service rendered and unauthorised and irregular expenditure.

Masualle says they welcome the report and are still going to read and analyse it and take necessary measures.

“It is factually not so that R300 million was spent. It was a portion of that because that amount of money was an amount of money dedicated for a specific purpose. But for purposes of this there was a portion of it. Go read what that portion is because it’s been audited. It’s in the figure of R22 million that was spent in that regard. Nonetheless, we shall look at the recommendations … of course apply our mind to it – the remedial measures that are proposed – to look at them in the context. This happened four year ago. We will look at it and then offer a comprehensive response to it,” says Masualle.
