On Wednesday Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will present the Mid-Term Budget Policy Statement before parliament.
Godongwana will highlight government's guarantees or contingent liabilities and ensure South Africa avoids any debt default.
SABC News is running a special focus called "Know your Budget" to help you make sense of some of the terminology that the minister will use in his speech.
But, before we get into that discussion, we have asked some economics students to explain what they understand by debt default.

Over the past number of years, the government has come up with a number of initiatives to try and deal with the high rate of unemployment in the country, particularly among the youth, which stands at over 60%.
It introduced the employment tax incentive ten years ago, has been running the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) for much longer, and introduced the Presidential Employment Stimulus a few years ago.
The initiatives, while created in good faith, don't appear to be making much of a dent in the country's unemployment problem.
Ahead of the mid-term budget where a number of key policies are expected to be referred to, I'm in conversation with a panel of speakers who are passionate about radically bringing down unemployment.
